Matt Gehlbach transformed personal setbacks into triumph, launching his successful Trophy Dad brand to help others achieve fitness goals.

Matt Gehlbach's journey illustrates how resilience can lead to unexpected opportunities in the fitness industry. Starting as a young athlete in California, Gehlbach’s experience with sports and physical fitness set the stage for his eventual career as a firefighter, but not without considerable challenges. With a commitment to personal growth, Gehlbach faced adversity head-on, ultimately pivoting into entrepreneurship in the world of fitness.
Early Inspirations and Athletic Pursuits
Growing up in the Bay Area, Gehlbach found athletic inspiration in his grandfather, bonding over local teams like the 49ers and Giants. While he had a passion for baseball, it was fitness and weight training that captured his long-term interest. However, early struggles with nutrition and weight management led him through various diets and training routines without much consistency.
"I tried finding something sustainable, but it felt impossible," Gehlbach recalled, reflecting on his convoluted relationship with fad diets.
His breakthrough moment came when he discovered club rugby during college, only to be sidelined by an old baseball injury. This setback became a turning point, steering him toward a fulfilling career in firefighting. During this transition, Gehlbach realized the significance of personal responsibility regarding health and fitness.
“It wasn’t until I got to the fire service where I realized that my health is my responsibility,” he shared.
Competitive Spirit and Personal Growth
Gehlbach's passion for fitness deepened as he consumed an array of resources, including bodybuilding magazines. An unexpected challenge arose when a friend encouraged him to participate in a bodybuilding contest. He embraced the challenge, hired a coach, and dedicated himself to intense preparation. The result? Victories in three out of four categories, fueling his competitive spirit.
He took his fire service career to Austin, Texas, but a personal tragedy struck with his father's sudden passing, prompting him to return to California. Eventually joining a local fire department, he soon faced an unexpected termination due to fitness level inconsistencies during his training period. Yet, this setback proved pivotal.
“I say to this day it is the best thing that ever happened to me, because it was such a wake-up call,” Gehlbach reflects.
After recommitting to his health, he lost thirty pounds and gained the fitness required to succeed in the San Jose Fire Department academy, which led to his hiring in 2018. This achievement not only reinforced his commitment to fitness but also set the foundation for what was to come next.
Launching Trophy Dad and Beyond
Gehlbach aimed to extend his impact beyond the fire station by helping other men regain control of their health. His T.R.O.P.H.Y. system birthed the Trophy Dad brand, designed to simplify the nutrition journey for fathers grappling with similar struggles. His entrepreneurial efforts also led him to develop a pre-workout supplement called Morning Would.
After dedicating over a decade to the fire service, Gehlbach took a bold leap in April 2026, resigning to fully commit to his entrepreneurial endeavors. The decision has already begun to yield results.
“It’s been all gas, no brakes ever since,” he stated, capturing the momentum he’s experienced in recent months.
Upcoming opportunities include a partnership with the nonprofit HeroWorks and participation in the prestigious Olympia World Fitness Expo in Las Vegas on September 25-26. Here's where Gehlbach plans to network and expand his influence, showcasing his commitment to helping others.
For Gehlbach, who once identified as a "165-pound skinny kid," attending the Olympia Weekend represents a dream now realized. His drive extends beyond personal achievement; he aims to inspire other fathers to envision their dreams and pursue them relentlessly.
“Envision, dream big. Be obsessive about what you want for your life,” he encourages.
